Jean Fautrier : exceptionnel tableau Construction , 1957

On Wednesday June 14, we will be auctioning an exceptional painting by Jean Fautrier, dated 1957, listed in the Michel Couturier archives, which has remained in the private collection since its acquisition.
Jean Fautrier's painting "Construction", dated 1957, is a work that bears witness to the French artist's artistic evolution. Born in 1898 and died in 1964, Fautrier was known for his abstract-expressionist style and his exploration of matter and texture in his works.

In the 1950s, after the devastation of the Second World War, artists were looking for new forms of expression to represent the human experience after this period of destruction and suffering. Fautrier was already an established artist by this time, and his painting "Construction" bears witness to his stylistic evolution.

The painting features an abstract composition with dominant shapes and colors. Fautrier uses oil and pigments to create a rich, tactile texture, a recurring feature in his work. Contrasts, geometric shapes and lines contribute to the visual tension of the work, encouraging the viewer to explore the different elements of the construction.

Fautrier also employs layering and scraping techniques to add depth and texture to the painting's surface. The work seems to capture the energy and complexity of the act of building, whether literally or metaphorically. Abstract forms can evoke architectural elements or symbolize the construction of self or society.

In the context of the 1950s, Fautrier's painting "Construction" reflects the desire of artists to find new forms of expression after the trauma of war. It represents an important step in the artist's artistic evolution, highlighting his interest in matter, texture, abstract forms and emotional expression.
