A Tumultuous Journey
André Lanskoy, born into Russian nobility in Moscow in 1902, was immersed in tumultuous times marked by revolution and civil war. His artistic career really took off after his exile to France in 1921, where he immersed himself in the Parisian artistic effervescence, becoming a key figure in the new École de Paris. Enrolled at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière, he discovered the works of Van Gogh and Matisse, while Soutine's influence became apparent in his early creations.
Initial explorations
The early years saw Lanskoy explore conventional themes such as landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Spotted by Wilhelm Uhde in 1924, he exhibited in the Netherlands until 1939, marking the beginning of his international renown.
The Abstract Transition
Around 1937, however, Lanskoy moved resolutely towards abstraction, initiating a gradual transition from figuration to informal painting. Between 1938 and 1940, he created a series of gouaches that bear witness to this evolution.
Color as language
From then on, color became the artist's preferred language. In his own words, "the love with which one takes color from the palette and places it on the canvas warms and illuminates the painting". Lanskoy abandons formal representation to create an intimate universe, vibrant with rich, colorful harmonies.
International recognition
In 1948, a major exhibition in Paris propelled Lanskoy onto the international scene, followed by others in Brussels, London, Lausanne, Zurich, New York and Berlin. This worldwide recognition reinforced his impact on art history.
Creative diversification
In the 50s, in parallel with his painting, he began creating cartoons for tapestry and book illustration.
Exploring the medium of paper
The diversity of his artistic expression extended to the paper medium, where he experimented with works on paper, gouaches, collages and lithographs. He also became a master of mosaics.
Total abstract mastery
By 1960, Lanskoy had completely mastered his abstract language, actively participating in major exhibitions such as the International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting in Pittsburgh and Documenta in Kassel.
