Jean Gaston Mantel

Jean Gaston Mantel studied painting at the École des beaux-arts de Paris.
In 1936, he was awarded the prize of the National Society of Fine Arts, which allowed him to spend a year in Morocco. He settled in Rabat in a workshop made available to laureates in the Kasbah des Oudayas and worked in Meknes alongside Mattéo Brondy (1866-1944). Returning to his hometown in 1937, he presented his work and applied for a position as a drawing teacher in Morocco, which he obtained in Rabat at the Orange Tree Colleges. Forced to return to France during the Second World War, he hastened to return to Morocco in 1946 and was appointed professor in Rabat at the Gouraud high school.
An exceptional canvas by Jean Gaston Mantel: not only is the subject much sought after for this artist, but the dimensions allow this great fresco to express itself as it should.
