About Alexander Iacovleff

Alexander Iacovleff, a naturalized French Russian artist of the early 20th century, left an indelible mark on the art world. Born on June 13, 1887 in St. Petersburg and died on May 12, 1938 in Paris, he was the son of a renowned Russian mathematician and the inventor of the Russian internal combustion engine.

At the age of 18, Iacovleff entered the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, under the tutelage of Dmitri Kardovski, a Russian painter, theater decorator and illustrator. A member of the "Mir Iskousstva" art movement, he worked as an illustrator for various magazines between 1908 and 1918.

Thanks to a grant, he traveled to Spain, Italy, Japan and China, forging links with such luminaries as the writer Joseph Kessel. Faced with the October Revolution, he moved to Paris in 1920, successfully exhibiting his work.

From 1922 to 1924, Iacovleff became the official painter of the "Croisière noire" in Africa, creating some 300 drawings. Later, in 1931-1932, he took part in the "Yellow Cruise" in China as official painter. He also directed the School of Drawings and Paintings at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in the United States, before returning to Paris, where he passed away.

The value of Alexander Iacovleff's works

An oil painter, Iacovleff favored landscapes, portraits and scenes of life captured during his travels. His canvases, medium to large in size, use vivid colors and the play of light, testifying to his worldwide experiences.

Today, his works are prized for their testimony to his travels, with prices ranging from 4,000 to 60,000 euros. His detailed drawings, in particular portraits, remain highly rated on the market, with prices ranging from a few hundred euros to 12,000 euros.

Less common, Iacovleff's varied prints, mainly from his travels in Asia and Africa, are priced from 30 euros to 6,000 euros due to the artist's international renown.
