Armand Guillaumin

Armand Guillaumin Born in Paris in 1841, Jean-Baptiste-Armand Guillaumin's family moved to Moulins in the Auvergne. In 1857, the young Guillaumin settled in Paris. Working for the Compagnie du Chemin de Fer Paris-Orléans, he cultivated his artistic passion by taking evening classes with sculptor Louis Denis Caillouette. His talent soon attracted attention, motivating him to enroll at the Académie Charles Suisse with the ambition of making a living from painting.
At the Academy, Guillaumin met Paul Cézanne and Camille Pissarro, and began immortalizing landscapes along the Seine. Although his early works were rejected by the Salon, his studio became a meeting place for such notable figures as Van Gogh and Gauguin. In 1863, he took part in the Salon des Refusés. His body of work, ranging from intimate portraits to still lifes, reveals a marked preference for landscapes. Between Paris, the Auvergne and the Creuse, Guillaumin regularly made Crozant his home, where he devoted himself to painting until his death in 1927.
The birth of Impressionism Although less famous than some of his peers, Guillaumin was a precursor of Impressionism. Participating in the First Impressionist Exhibition in 1874, he contributed to six of the eight Expressionist exhibitions. Guillaumin claimed an instantaneous style of painting, distancing himself from theoretical debates and adopting a fauve palette in the early 20th century.
