BANKSY
BANKSY (1974) - Bomb Hugger, No, 2003 - Aerosol and stencil on cardboard - 71 x 50 cm - Part of the series of signs known by "Pest Control", notably used by demonstrators in opposition to the war in Iraq in 2003 - Provenance: Private collection --- Banksy created a number of different posters for the 2003 London protest, but few of the originals survived because they were either thrown on the street or confiscated by the Metropolitan Police. Will Axon, Senior Auctioneer at Rowley's said, "This is one of the few occasions when an image can truly be called iconic, the fact that it is on a rather fragile piece of crumpled cardboard only adds to that. "Banksy was able to capture the anti-war sentiment in this image. "Although his work has transcended the street, it has not lost its strength - his images are powerful and memorable - his work manages to do what any great work of art should do - it makes us think. Pest Control, which is responsible for authenticating Banksy's work, is listed in the auction as saying that it could not issue an authentication certificate for works considered "street-art".
