Ikwara Punu mask, Gabon - Lot 78
Ikwara Punu mask, Gabon Hardwood with brown patina H. 32 cm With its magnificent presence, this heart-shaped face is crossed by a long vertical scarification running from the forehead to the nose. The slightly rounded eyes are slit and stretched, as is the oval mouth, with two tegumental furrows at the corners. The shell-shaped headdress is soberly marked at the bottom with a few strands of plaited hair described on either side. Blackened or, as here, burnished, ikwara masks - like the white okuyi masks associated with the Beyond - appeared at night, by torchlight. A fine example with a brown patina polished by use.
