Bambara sukuru mask, Mali - Lot 79
Bambara sukuru mask, Mali Wood with brown patina 32 cm high Anthropozoomorphic face with powerful lines, the high, domed forehead protecting a recessed gaze, pierced on either side by an aquiline nose. The sketchy mouth forms the terminal point of the two curves forming the mask's profile. At the top of the head, two outstretched ears. Linked to the male society of the korè, this mask represents a hyena or suruku, for the Bambara. This is the sixth society, and corresponds to the ultimate degree of initiation, enabling young men to understand their relationship with nature.
