Set of two sculptures - Lot 197
Set of two sculptures
Clovis-Edmond MASSON (1838-1913). Dogs. Regulated sculpture. Signed on the base. Stone base. 32.5 x 28 x 11.5 cm
Attached is a cast-iron sculpture of the Sleeping Dog monogrammed L.T (L. Tillet). 11.5 x 6 x 7 cm
Note: Clovis-Edmond Masson was one of the major animal sculptors of the second half of the XIXᵉ century, trained by Antoine-Louis Barye.
His highly sought-after groups of dogs are distinguished by a nervous realism, a keen observation of movement and a fine patina.
The large group shown here is a perfect example of his skill, with its expressive attitude, precise rendering of coats and dynamic composition.
The second, depicting a dozing dog, is a charming decorative complement, appreciated for its size and subject.
