Mithé ESPELT (1923-2020) - Lot 53
Mithé ESPELT (1923-2020) Vallauris, circa 1955-1965 Square polychrome-glazed ceramic box decorated with a stylized blue and green flower on a brown background, in a gilded brass frame. The lid is decorated with a cloisonné pattern typical of the artist's work. Back lined with green felt. Dimensions: 9.5 × 10 cm Note: This box illustrates Mithé Espelt's decorative work of the 1950s-1960s, a period during which the artist developed a singular language combining naive iconography, structured graphic composition and a contrasting palette. Stylized floral decoration and the use of cloisonné, enhanced by gilded brass mounts, are characteristic of her Vallauris productions, now sought after by collectors of French modernist ceramics. Comparative bibliography - Viviane Giroud, Vallauris, la céramique française 1945-1960, Éditions Norma, 2001. - Pierre Staudenmeyer, Céramiques de Vallauris, Paris, Éditions du Chêne. - Musée Magnelli - Musée de la Céramique, Vallauris, public collections (comparable boxes and decorative objects).
