Joana VASCONCELOS(1971) - Lot 15
Joana VASCONCELOS(1971) Lilaea 2021 Pigment print, numbered and signed. Paper: Somerset Velvet Fine Art 330 g Format : 270 x 380 mm Justified 104/ 120 A major artist on the international contemporary scene, Joana Vasconcelos has been developing a body of work since the 1990s based on the misappropriation of craft skills, domestic materials and codes associated with the female body. Her work forcefully questions notions of identity, gender, power and representation, oscillating between visual seduction and social critique. With Lilaea (2021), Vasconcelos offers a sensual, ambiguous vision of the female body. The nude, partially concealed beneath a network of lace and crocheted textures, appears both offered and protected. The skin becomes a decorative, almost textile surface, blurring the boundary between the living body and the fashioned object. This hybridization lies at the heart of the artist's approach, transforming the body into symbolic territory. Pigment printing renders the details of the materials with great finesse, playing on the contrast between the carnal softness of flesh tones and the graphic complexity of white and red motifs. Lace, a recurring material for Joana Vasconcelos, evokes the domestic and feminine universe, while at the same time evoking a delicate form of armor, both ornamental and protective. Printed on 330 g Somerset Velvet Fine Art paper, this numbered and signed print (104/120) is part of the artist's recent graphic production, sought-after for its technical rigor and conceptual coherence. Lilaea is emblematic of the way Joana Vasconcelos renews the representation of the nude, charging it with contemporary issues linked to the body, the gaze and female identity. Note :
