Note: Kees Visser (b. 1948 in the Netherlands, lives and works between Haarlem, Paris and Reykjavik) began developing his work with color in 1976, weaving strips of paper before producing tableaux-reliefs made of wooden planks. Leaving his native Holland, where his work oscillated between abstraction and Fluxus, he moved to Iceland, where he lived for almost twenty years in contact with a natural environment that had a profound influence on his work. Co-founder with a group of Icelandic artists of the Living Art Museum in Reykjavik in 1978, he rubbed shoulders with a cosmopolitan art scene that included artists such as Dieter Roth, Donald Judd, Richard Serra, Roni Horn, Hrein Fridffinson, Adrian Schiess, Günter Umberg and Richard Long. Kees Visser made a name for himself in France in the mid-1990s for his methodical work on series, form and color, immediately recognizable in his monumental, monochrome paintings on paper, where slightly skewed rectangular figures flush with the surface of the canvas. Almost by crystallization, these figures form spaces in which color is inscribed in progressive strata, playing on the ambiguity of movement. Kees Visser's work is minimal, radical and conceptual. A lover of Wittgenstein and John Cage, he seeks the metaphysical nature of art through an exercise in deconstructing style. His work can be found in numerous collections (Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; MOMA, New York; Victoria & Albert Museum, London) and has been shown in international exhibitions in Iceland, at the National Gallery and the Living Art Gallery, in the Netherlands and several times in France.
