Note: An imposing publication from the early XIXᵉ century, this complete Collection des tableaux historiques de la Révolution française constitutes a veritable illustrated fresco of the events that marked French history between 1787 and the advent of the Empire. Produced under the Consulate and published under the Empire, the work reflects a desire to fix and transmit the memory of the Revolution through a succession of striking scenes, accompanied by historical commentaries.
The many meticulously executed engravings offer a visual interpretation of major revolutionary episodes: assemblies, insurrectionary days, political figures, ceremonies and institutional transformations. They interact with the texts to create a narrative that is both educational and spectacular, typical of the great publishing enterprises of the period.
Printed by Pierre Didot l'Aîné, one of the most prestigious printers of his time, this set is distinguished by its format and encyclopedic ambition. Today, it is a remarkable testimony to the way in which the French Revolution was imaged and interpreted from the early XIXᵉ century.
