STARS, STRIPES AND DRUGS, image from John G. Avildsen's film - Lot 9
STARS, STRIPES AND DRUGS, image from John G. Avildsen's film "Joe is America too", 1970 Photo, period color print Stamped and annotated on back Creases, tears Dimensions: 30 X 24 cm Tack holes at corner tips Note: This color photograph was taken from the film Joe (Joe is also America), directed by John G. Avildsen and released in 1970. The film, starring Peter Boyle, Dennis Patrick and Susan Sarandon (in one of her first film roles), was set in the troubled social and political climate of the United States in the late 1960s. A landmark work of American independent cinema at the time, Joe deals directly with the tensions in American society linked to the counter-culture, the Vietnam War and generational divisions. The film was widely acclaimed on release, and helped to establish the reputation of director John G. Avildsen, who would go on to direct the international hit Rocky (1976). This promotional image bears witness to the iconography of American cinema in the early 1970s, a period marked by a cruder, more critical depiction of society.
