GERARD PHILIPE at the Theater (TNP), 1950s - Lot 58
GERARD PHILIPE at the Theater (TNP), 1950s Photo attributed to Agnès Varda, vintage silver print Dull back. 24 x 18 cm Traces of handling Note: A major actor in post-war French theater and cinema, Gérard Philipe (1922-1959) was an emblematic figure of the Théâtre National Populaire (TNP) directed by Jean Vilar. At this institution, which moved to the Palais de Chaillot in 1951, he played a number of leading roles in the classical and contemporary repertoires, contributing to Vilar's ambition to make theater accessible to as many people as possible. The photograph, attributed to Agnès Varda (1928-2019), bears witness to this essential period in French theatrical life in the 1950s. Before becoming one of the major figures of the Nouvelle Vague, Varda worked as a photographer, notably with the TNP, producing numerous portraits of actors and theatrical scenes that today bear precious witness to this artistic adventure.
