ALBERT EINSTEIN, cropped portrait of the scientist, 1954 - Lot 133
ALBERT EINSTEIN, cropped portrait of the scientist, 1954 Photo, vintage silver print Remainder of stamp and annotation on back Dimensions: 11.2 x 10.8 cm Photo cropped Note: Portrait of Albert Einstein (1879-1955), German-born, naturalized American theoretical physicist, considered one of the greatest scientists of the XXᵉ century. Known for formulating the theory of relativity, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his explanation of the photoelectric effect, a major contribution to the development of modern physics. Taken in 1954, a year before the scientist's death, this photograph testifies to the late period of his life, when he was pursuing his research at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. The image, cropped here, is part of the widespread distribution of portraits of Einstein in the press and scientific publications of the post-war period, which helped make him one of the most recognizable intellectual figures of the century.
