GEORGES ROUAULT, portrait of the painter in his studio, 1950 - Lot 152
GEORGES ROUAULT, portrait of the painter in his studio, 1950s Photo attributed to Yvonne Chevalier Captioned, stamped and annotated on the back Dimensions: 24 x18 cm Note: Georges Rouault (1871-1958), French painter and engraver, ranks among the major artists of French art in the XXᵉ century. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Gustave Moreau's studio, he developed a deeply personal body of work, marked by powerful expression, thick contours reminiscent of stained glass and a dark, intense palette. His subjects - religious figures, judges, clowns or popular characters - often express a spiritual and humanist dimension. This photograph, taken in the 1950s, shows the artist in his studio, providing a rare glimpse into his working environment at the end of his career. The shot is attributed to Yvonne Chevalier, a photographer known for her portraits of artists and cultural figures in mid-20ᵉ century France. The image is part of the iconography devoted to Rouault, one of the great exponents of modern French painting.
