VICTOR HUGO, portrait of Victor Hugo, after the painting by - Lot 155
VICTOR HUGO, portrait of Victor Hugo, after the painting by Léon Bonnat, 1880s Later silver print (1910s, 1920s) Annotated on the back Dimensions: 14 x 11 cm Note: Portrait of Victor Hugo (1802-1885), a major writer, poet and playwright of the XIXᵉ century, based on the famous portrait painted by Léon Bonnat (1833-1922). This painting, executed in the last years of the writer's life, has become one of the most widely circulated images of the author. A central figure of French Romanticism, Victor Hugo is the author of such major works as Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) and Les Misérables (1862). His influence extends far beyond the literary sphere, as his political and humanist commitment also left its mark on the intellectual and social life of his time. This photographic print, made later in the 1910s-1920s, bears witness to the spread and enduring popularity of the writer's image through the photographic reproduction of painted portraits. A slight thumbtack hole at a corner point and a small stain on a border.
