An acute observer of the political and military upheavals of his time, he is notably the author of such now-famous novels and stories as Kaputt (1944) and La Peau (The Shovel, 1949), inspired by his experience as a war correspondent during the Second World War. It is part of the press iconography devoted to this singular figure in European intellectual life.
