ANDRE MALRAUX with painter Marcel Gromaire, writer Saint-Joh - Lot 159
ANDRE MALRAUX with painter Marcel Gromaire, writer Saint-John Perse, 1959/60 3 photos, vintage silver prints Captioned (dated labels) and stamped on all backs Dimensions: 18 x 13 cm each. Note: André Malraux (1901-1976), French writer, intellectual and statesman, was one of the major figures in the cultural and political life of the XXᵉ century. Author of novels such as La Condition humaine (Prix Goncourt 1933), he also played an important role in French cultural policy, becoming the first Minister of Cultural Affairs in 1959. These photographs, dated 1959-1960, show him in the company of two great figures of the artistic and literary world: the painter Marcel Gromaire (1892-1971), associated with powerful, structured figurative painting, and the poet Saint-John Perse (1887-1975), who went on to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1960. They bear witness to relations between literary, artistic and cultural circles at a time marked by a major renewal of cultural policies in France.
