JOHN KENNEDY at a telethon in Manchester N.H., debate with c - Lot 205
JOHN KENNEDY at a telethon in Manchester N.H., debate with candidate Richard Nixon, 1962 Photo by Jacques Lowe, silver print on vintage cartoline paper (large format) Stamped (including photographer and date) and annotated on the back. Dimensions: 35.3 x 28 cm Note: Photograph depicting John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), 35ᵉ President of the United States, at a telethon in Manchester, New Hampshire, in a context of political debate with Richard Nixon, dated 1962. Kennedy and Nixon were the protagonists of one of the most famous political confrontations in American history, notably during the televised debates of the 1960 presidential election, the first widely televised debates in the United States. These encounters marked a turning point in the history of modern political communication. The photograph is by Jacques Lowe (1930-2001), a German-born photographer who became one of John F. Kennedy's principal official photographers. His work extensively documented the president's public and private life in the years leading up to and during his term of office. This large-format silver print bears witness to the political iconography associated with the Kennedy presidency and the rise of televised media coverage of political life in the early 1960s.
