LE GRAND PALAIS, BY DAY AND NIGHT, Belle époque, 1900s - Lot 221
LE GRAND PALAIS, BY DAY AND NIGHT, Belle époque, 1900s 4 photos, citrate paper and silver prints from the period Mute backs Dimensions: 13 x 18 cm each. Note: Built for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, the Grand Palais is one of the most emblematic monuments of Belle Époque Parisian architecture. Designed by architects Henri Deglane, Albert Louvet, Albert Thomas and Charles Girault, the building is distinguished by its characteristic combination of stone, steel and glass, dominated by the large glass roof of the central nave. These photographic views, taken by day and night in the early XXᵉ century, testify to the monument's appeal from the moment of its inauguration. The night-time illuminations, particularly spectacular during exhibitions and events, were part of the staging of Parisian modernity and the monumental architecture of the time. These prints illustrate the role of the Grand Palais as a major venue for exhibitions, salons and artistic events since its creation, and as a symbol of the cultural and architectural prestige of Paris at the turn of the century.
