TENNIS PLAYERS - BELLE EPOQUE, tennismen, single, doubles, p - Lot 231
TENNIS PLAYERS - BELLE EPOQUE, tennismen, single, doubles, players, competitions, 1900s 10 photos, prints on vintage citrate paper Annotated on some spines Dimensions: 12.5 x 10.2 cm each. Note: This set of photographs depicts tennis players engaged in singles and doubles competitions in the early XXᵉ century, a period corresponding to the rise of international tennis during the Belle Époque. Introduced in England in the 1870s, lawn tennis rapidly spread throughout Europe and English-speaking countries, supported by the development of clubs and major tournaments. At the turn of the century, prestigious competitions such as Wimbledon (founded in 1877) and the Davis Cup (founded in 1900) helped to structure the sport and popularize its champions. Photographs of players in action or posing on the courts played an important part in this diffusion, and today provide precious evidence of sporting iconography and the first generations of international tennis players.
