CDV - VISIT CARDS Late 19th century, figures including Alexa - Lot 258
CDV - VISIT CARDS Late 19th century, figures including Alexandre Dumas fils (by Bayard & Bertall), 1880s/1900. 74 CDV, albumin or silver prints mounted on cardboard Photographers' credits under some images and on all spines, and one annotated background. Dimensions: approx. 10.5 x 6 cm each Some foxing. Note: A set of seventy-four photographic cartes de visite (CDV) dating from the late XIXᵉ century, circa 1880-1900. These albumin or silver prints mounted on cardboard depict various characters and portraits, including Alexandre Dumas fils (1824-1895), French writer and playwright, author of La Dame aux camélias (1848). The carte de visite format, introduced in the 1850s and widely used until the end of the XIXᵉ century, was a huge success. These studio-made, easily reproducible photographic portraits were exchanged, collected and kept in family albums. Several photographs bear the credits of photographic studios, notably Bayard & Bertall, beneath the images and on the backs of the cardboards, testifying to the production and distribution of photographic portraits by the specialized workshops of the period. This set is a representative testimony to the practice of photographic portraiture and the culture of business cards in the XIXᵉ century.
