MAHARAJAH, formal and informal wear, 1920s - Lot 284
MAHARAJAH, formal and informal wear, 1920s 2 photographs by Bertram Park, vintage silver prints mounted on cardboard sheets Signed below the images, dry and wet stamped (on the backs) by the photographer Dimensions: 20 x 14.8 cm & 28.5 x 18 cm (photos) Note: Photographs of a maharajah in the 1920s, portrayed in both traditional ceremonial costume and civilian dress. These portraits illustrate the contrast between the ceremonial dress associated with princely status in India at the time and the more Westernized clothing adopted in certain public or private contexts. The shots are by British photographer Bertram Park (1883-1972), a renowned portraitist active in London during the first half of the XXᵉ century. Park produced numerous portraits of personalities from the aristocratic world and international high society, characterized by elegant staging and careful lighting. These period silver prints, signed beneath the images and mounted on cardboard sheets, bear witness to the tradition of photographic portraiture for the elite and the iconography associated with Indian princes during the colonial period.
