NÔ THEATRE - JAPAN, masked actor, 1930 - Lot 289
NÔ THEATRE - JAPAN, masked actor, 1930 Photo by Gentbe (Leipzig) Silver print on vintage matte cartoline paper, photographer's dry stamp and stamps Annotated on back Dimensions: 22.5 x 16.2 cm Bends, slight scratches, small stain Note : Photograph depicting a masked actor from Noh theater, a major form of traditional Japanese theater whose origins date back to the XIVᵉ century. Characterized by the use of codified masks, stylized gestures and poetic dramaturgy, Noh is one of the oldest performing arts still practiced in Japan. Produced in 1930 by the photographer Genthe (Leipzig), this image bears witness to the interest of European photographers and publishers in traditional Japanese arts at the beginning of the XXᵉ century. The print on vintage matte cartoline paper, bearing a dry photographer's stamp, is part of the photographic diffusion of Japanese culture to Western audiences.
