Matthieu CHAZAL (1974 - 2024) - Lot 188
Matthieu CHAZAL (1974 - 2024) Celebration Yezide, Iraq, 2018 Silver print Dimensions: 18 x 24 cm Note: In this photograph, Matthieu Chazal captures a moment of Yezidi gathering with fragmented, highly constructed writing. The framing is deliberately obstructed in the foreground by a cut-off male figure, which acts as a screen and reinforces the impression of discreet, almost clandestine observation. The focus is on the young women, whose sideways glances and closed expressions introduce a narrative tension. They seem both present at the event and slightly withdrawn, aware of the outside gaze. This ambiguity, between participation and distance, is at the heart of the image. The composition plays on layers - blurred foreground, sharp figures, partial bodies - translating the social and cultural complexity of the moment. In this way, Chazal develops a sensitive documentary photography, where the photographic gesture reveals as much as it questions the viewer's place.
