James GUITET (1925-2010) - Lot 279
James GUITET (1925-2010) The Triumph of Spring after Boticelli, 1998 2 oils on canvas Signed, titled and dated on back 100 x 100 cm Note: In this work created in 1998, James Guitet continues his research into the extreme simplification of form, taking inspiration here from Botticelli's Triumph of Spring, from which he retains only the linear memory and rhythm of the silhouettes. The figure is no longer depicted descriptively, but suggested by a series of light, almost incised lines that emerge from a clear, silent background. The artist thus transforms a reference to Renaissance painting into an abstract meditation on movement, memory and trace. The delicately punctuated lines structure the space without filling it, letting the canvas breathe and reinforcing the contemplative dimension of the composition. Towards the end of his career, Guitet developed an increasingly stripped-down style of painting, in which the motif disappears in favor of a minimal language of rhythm, repetition and minute variations, giving these works a presence that is both discreet and profoundly poetic.
