Michel GINIES (1952) - Lot 179

Michel GINIES (1952) Place de la Concorde under the snow 1996 Silver print Numbered 2/25 Signed in the margin Image size : 30 x 40 cm Dimensions with sound and passe partout : 40 x 50 cm Note: In this photograph, Michel Giniès transforms the Place de la Concorde into an almost unreal space, entirely covered in snow. The landscape is simplified into a pared-down composition dominated by whites and grays, giving the scene a silent, suspended atmosphere. The solitary figure, protected by an umbrella, stands out clearly. Placed in profile, it introduces a discreet human dimension to the immensity of the scene. The chain in the foreground and the obelisk in the background structure the image, guiding the eye and reinforcing depth. Here, Giniès plays on the contrast between monumentality and isolation, capturing a rare moment of calm in the heart of the city. His gaze favors a poetry of the moment, where the snow erases the urban tumult to make way for an almost contemplative scene.
