Pierre BOULAT (1924 - 1998) The West Point Cadets, 1957 Silver print, 1998 On back, copyright, titled, dated Dimensions: 40 x 50 cm Note: Pierre Boulat, a great reporter with a humanist eye, is as interested in events as he is in social forms and how they are portrayed. In this photograph of the West Point cadets, he constructs a highly graphic composition based on the repetition of bodies and lines. The rows of soldiers, perfectly aligned, create an almost abstract motif in which the individual disappears in favor of the group. Black and white accentuates the rigor of the scene and underlines military discipline, transforming a documentary moment into an image that is both structured and symbolic of the collective.
