In the foreground, a fisherman in traditional costume rides his horse and cart - an ancient practice specific to the Belgian coast. But the scene takes place at the heart of an urban crossroads, surrounded by traffic lights, road markings and contemporary buildings.
The image thus creates an almost unusual discrepancy: yesterday's world crosses into today's. The centered composition, with the STOP sign and traffic lights, reinforces this impression of pause, as if time itself stopped for a moment between two eras.
