Jean-Pierre LAFFONT (Born 1932) - Lot 278
Jean-Pierre LAFFONT (Born 1932) Homophile Action League, group portrait, the very first Gay Pride in history, New York, 1970 Vintage silver print Photographer's stamp and typed caption in French on back Dimensions: 30.5 x 20.5 cm Note: The event received little press coverage. Only photojournalist Jean-Pierre Laffont, sent by the Gamma agency, was commissioned to report on it. Today, his images provide invaluable testimony to this seminal moment. This photograph by Jean-Pierre Laffont highlights an essential dimension of the first LGBTQ+ mobilizations: collective affirmation. The group, gathered in front of the Homophile Action League banner, lends itself to the shot with an obvious awareness of the moment. Unlike more spontaneous images of the march, here the pose is assumed, almost claimed, as a way of existing publicly. The inscription on the banner refers to the first militant organizations of the homophile movement, which predates the term "gay". This detail anchors the image in a pivotal period, at the crossroads of two eras: that of a still discreet militancy and that of a new, more assertive visibility, expressed in the street. Laffont aptly captures this transition. The photographer on the left of the picture, camera in hand, is another reminder of the crucial role of the media gaze: to be photographed is also to make oneself visible, to inscribe one's struggle in history. The group's energy, combining gravity, pride and solidarity, lends the image a remarkable documentary and human force. Like the series as a whole, this photograph is a rare testimony to a founding moment, when a collective identity, still fragile but determined to assert itself, was constructed in the public arena.
