Note: In this night scene captured in Paris in 1986, José Nicolas plunges into the heart of an intimate evening, capturing the energy of a shared moment. The tight, dense image gives the impression of being in the midst of the group, as close as possible to the conversations and gestures.
Faces meet, turn away, come closer; bodies lean in, touch. A couple embrace in the middle, while others talk in hushed tones. Glasses, cigarettes and close glances contribute to the convivial, spontaneous atmosphere.
The fragmented, almost chaotic composition conveys the movement and liveliness of the scene. The black-and-white color scheme reinforces the impression of being captured on the spot, in a contrasting, slightly grainy light.
True to his humanist approach, José Nicolas captures here a moment of ordinary life, made up of relationships and emotions, where the intimate and the collective merge in the same image.
