José NICOLAS (1956) - Lot 382

José NICOLAS (1956) Boat People with Bernard Kouchner, China Sea, 1987 Silver print On back, titled, signed, dated Dimensions: 30 x 40 cm Note: In this photograph taken in the China Sea, José Nicolas documents a humanitarian situation by closely framing a group of Vietnamese refugees, alongside Bernard Kouchner. The image, taken from above, squeezes the bodies into the space of the boat, accentuating promiscuity and tension. The upward-looking gazes suggest expectation, even uncertainty about the future. The water in the background recalls the isolation and precariousness of their situation. The photographer adopts a committed, reportage-like point of view, bearing witness to a historic moment while retaining a strong human dimension. Black and white reinforces the seriousness of the scene and enhances the expressions, making this photograph part of a documentary tradition in which the image becomes both testimony and memory.
