GRETA GARBO - Lot 112
GRETA GARBO MGM Fashion publicity portrait, 1930s. Photo, vintage silver print, captioned and paper remnant pasted to back. 27.5 x 20 cm including white edges. Handling marks on white edges and minor bumps visible only against the light. Note: A very elegant MGM publicity portrait of Greta Garbo, perfectly illustrating the studio's sophisticated aesthetic of the 1930s. The actress, a major figure in the Hollywood star system, appears in a hieratic, uncluttered pose, typical of her image built around mystery and distance. The evening gown, with its long, structured fall, and the minimalist set with its geometric volumes, are directly inspired by the codes of modernism and fashion photography of the period. This type of portrait, intended for promotion and distribution to the press, contributed to the creation of the Garbo icon, whose media rarity today reinforces the appeal of these original documents. MGM prints from the 1930s are particularly sought-after, especially when they are carefully composed and well preserved, as is the case here despite the presence of a label remnant on the reverse. The image stands out for its formal balance, print quality and the presence of the reference number in the lower right-hand corner, confirming its original promotional use. It is a significant testimony to the golden age of Hollywood and the central role played by studios in the visual construction of stars.
