CYD CHARISSE - Lot 119
CYD CHARISSE MGM Fashion publicity portrait, 1962. Photo, vintage silver print, credits below image, annotated on back. 25.5 x 20.7 cm Note: A very elegant promotional portrait for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, perfectly illustrating the sophisticated aesthetics of Hollywood productions in the early 1960s. Cyd Charisse, a major figure of American musical cinema, appears in a constructed pose, highlighting her lanky figure and exceptional choreographic bearing, a direct legacy of her career as a dancer. The composition, at once pared-down and theatrical, is based on a subtle contrast between the minimalist decor and the richness of the materials (shiny fabric, dark stole), typical of studio portraits intended for the press and international promotion. This type of print, produced by MGM, was distributed via agencies such as the National Screen Service, which explains the presence of printed credits at the bottom of the image, an important element for authentication and dating. Late portraits of Cyd Charisse (1960s) are less common than those from the period of the great musicals of the 1950s, giving this print added interest on the market. The set presents a good state of preservation and an excellent visual impact, sought after both for its aesthetic quality and for the emblematic MGM studio signature.
