Hassan El GLAOUI (1924-2018) - Lot 164
Hassan El GLAOUI (1924-2018) Cavalcade Watercolor gouache and ink on bistre paper Signed lower left 45 x 60 cm Small tears in left margin Note: A major figure in twentieth-century Moroccan painting, Hassan El Glaoui (1924-2018) devoted an essential part of his oeuvre to the representation of horses and fantasia riders, subjects that have become his true artistic signature. Trained in Paris after being encouraged in his vocation by Winston Churchill, he developed a personal figurative style combining Moroccan tradition and modern sensibility. In Cavalcade, the artist depicts one of his favorite themes: the charge of galloping riders. More than a simple equestrian scene, this composition evokes the Moroccan fantasia, an ancestral tradition celebrating the skill of riders and the warrior heritage of the Maghreb. For El Glaoui, the horse becomes the symbol of nobility, freedom and Moroccan collective memory. Through the vigor of his strokes, the spontaneity of his watercolor gouaches and the energy of his movements, the artist captures all the power of this cavalcade. His fantasia scenes, much sought-after by collectors, occupy a central place in his work and contribute to its importance in the history of modern Moroccan art.
