Note: Georges Rouault is one of the great figures of French modern art. His work, deeply marked by a reflection on the human condition, is distinguished by the expressive power of its figures and the dramatic intensity of its blacks.
This aquatint from the famous Miserere suite, entitled Ne sommes-nous pas forçats? was produced in 1926 and published by Ambroise Vollard. Considered one of the pinnacles of twentieth-century printmaking, the series develops a serious and profoundly humanist vision of the post-war world. The monumental figure depicted here conveys all the spiritual and emotional power of Rouault's work.
Printed on Arches paper by Jacquemin imprimeur and referenced in François Chapon's book (Rouault, œuvre gravé, n°59), this work is an important piece for lovers of modern prints and the world of Georges Rouault.
