*Otto WOLS (1913–1951) Camp les Milles, 1940 Color engraving on Arches paper, signed on the plate Numbered 63/100 in pencil in the lower left corner Published by Michel Couturier & Cie with the permission of Mrs. Gretty Wols in June 1968 57 x 38 cm Note: A key figure in the postwar European avant-garde, Wols—the pseudonym of Otto Wolfgang Schulze—is considered one of the major precursors of lyrical abstraction and Informel art. His work, deeply marked by exile, war, and internment, developed a unique visual language in which organic forms, floating signs, and energetic lines come together to create worlds that are as poetic as they are unsettling. *Le Camp des Milles, 1940* echoes this defining period in the artist’s life, during which he was interned at the Camp des Milles near Aix-en-Provence at the start of World War II. In this dreamlike and fragmented composition, hybrid silhouettes, unstable structures, and motifs suspended in an almost unreal space appear, revealing all the inner tension and visionary sensibility characteristic of Wols. This color print on Arches paper, signed on the plate and numbered 63/100, was published in 1968 by Michel Couturier & Cie with the permission of Mrs. Gretty Wols. It stands as a precious testament to the artist’s graphic universe, which is now particularly sought after by collectors of modern and postwar art.
