Paolo BONI (1926-2017) - Lot 84
Paolo BONI (1926-2017) Chimera, 1962 Carborundum etching Signed, dated, titled, justified on 12 copies. 52 x 35 cm (sheet), 33 x 24 cm (vat) Note: This 1962 carborundum etching by Paolo Boni bears witness to the artist's research into printmaking techniques and material effects. The composition, entitled Chimère, is based on organic, fragmented forms, whose irregular contours seem to emerge from the surface of the paper like imprints or reliefs. The use of carborundum, a process that produces rich, grainy textures, gives the image an almost tactile presence, characteristic of the graphic experiments of the 1950s-1960s. Here, Boni develops a language on the borderline between abstraction and figuration, in which forms evoke silhouettes, fossils or imaginary assemblages, in keeping with the work's title. Printed in a very small number, justified on 12 copies, this print illustrates the artist's interest in innovative technical processes and free plastic writing, close to the spirit of post-war European abstraction.
