JAYNE MANSFIELD - Lot 44
JAYNE MANSFIELD On the set of Terence Young's film "Too Hot To Handle", 1960. Photo, vintage silver print, annotated on back. 25.4 x 20.6 cm including blank edges. Note: This photograph of Jayne Mansfield is typical of the spectacular, ultra-mediatized image the actress built up in the late 1950s. Taken during the filming of Terence Young's Too Hot to Handle - released in 1960 under the British title Playgirl After Dark - it shows Mansfield in a theatrical, provocative pose, accentuated by the tight-fitting costume, fishnets and long cigarette smoker. The aesthetic of the scene borrows as much from cabaret as from Hollywood glamour, in a staging designed to exalt her public persona as an "incendiary blonde". Often presented as a rival to Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield nevertheless developed a more outrageous and deliberately excessive image, perfectly suited to the evolution of popular cinema and media culture in the 1960s. This set photograph bears witness to a pivotal moment when classic Hollywood glamour shifted towards a more direct and ironic sensuality. The vintage silver print retains all the promotional power of these images, designed for the press and the international release of films.
