THE DEVIL'S PASS - Lot 192
THE DEVIL'S PASS Bamiyan Buddha - Afghanistan (since destroyed by the Taliban!)... film by J. Dupont and P. Schoendoerffer, based on a screenplay by Joseph Kessel, 1956. Photo, vintage silver print, annotated on back. 24 x 17.3 cm. Note: Photograph depicting the Buddhas of Bâmiyân in Afghanistan in La Passe du diable, a film directed by Jacques Dupont and Pierre Schoendoerffer from a screenplay by Joseph Kessel, released in 1956. Shot in Afghanistan under expedition conditions that were exceptional for the time, this adventure film bears witness to a world that has now disappeared. The gigantic Buddhas of Bâmiyân, visible in this image, were destroyed in March 2001 by the Taliban, making these photographic and cinematographic documents particularly moving and precious historical testimonies. Pierre Schoendoerffer, a major future filmmaker of reportage and human adventure, was involved in one of his first major film projects. The photographs taken during the filming of Afghanistan in the 1950s and of the Buddhas of Bâmiyân are of considerable documentary and heritage interest today.
