WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES - HÄXAN - Lot 224
WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES - HÄXAN Silent documentary film by Benjamin Christensen, 1922. Photo, later print (1980s) on RC paper, annotated on back. 12.6 x 16.3 cm. Note : Photograph dedicated to Häxan (Witchcraft through the Ages), a documentary and experimental film directed by Benjamin Christensen and released in 1922. A major work of Scandinavian silent cinema, this singular film blends historical reconstruction, pseudo-documentary essay and fantastic imagery around the beliefs associated with witchcraft and the Inquisition. With its expressionist aesthetic, innovative special effects and daring scenes for its time, Häxan remains one of the most fascinating and avant-garde films of European silent cinema. This later print from the 1980s testifies to the renewed cinephile interest in the great classics of silent fantasy cinema during the second half of the XXᵉ century. Häxan-related material is particularly sought-after by collectors of expressionist cinema, fantasy and experimental film history. Note:
