DRACULA, PRINCE DES TENEBRES - DRACULA: PRINCE OF DARKNESS - Lot 227
DRACULA, PRINCE DES TENEBRES - DRACULA: PRINCE OF DARKNESS Christopher Lee, Barbara Shelley... film by Terence Fisher, 1966. 6 photos, later "deluxe" silver prints (1980s) on RC paper, muted backs. 30.5 x 24 cm each. Note: Set of six photographs dedicated to Dracula: Prince of Darkness, directed by Terence Fisher for Hammer Films and released in 1966. Christopher Lee reprises one of his most famous roles, that of Count Dracula, in a work that became emblematic of the British Gothic revival of the 1960s. Starring Barbara Shelley, an important figure in Hammer fantasy, the film develops the baroque, sensual aesthetic characteristic of the English studio. Terence Fisher remains the major director of Hammer productions devoted to Dracula and Frankenstein, helping to redefine fantasy cinema through the use of color, a sophisticated gothic atmosphere and more explicit violence than in classic Universal productions. These later "deluxe" prints from the 1980s on RC paper testify to the cult status the film has acquired among fantasy film fans. Coherent sets devoted to Hammer productions are particularly sought-after by specialized collectors.
