JEAN-PIERRE MELVILLE - Lot 311
JEAN-PIERRE MELVILLE On a film set... 1960s. Photo by Jean-Pierre Bonnotte, vintage silver print, stamped (including the photographer) and annotated on the back. 25.3 x 20.2 cm. Note: Photograph of Jean-Pierre Melville on a film set in the 1960s. A key figure in French cinema, Jean-Pierre Melville is considered one of the great masters of modern film noir, thanks to such iconic works as Le Samouraï, Le Cercle rouge and L'Armée des ombres. A precursor admired by the Nouvelle Vague and influential far beyond French cinema, Melville imposed a refined visual style and a singular aesthetic blending solitude, detective story codes and formal rigor. Produced by Jean-Pierre Bonnotte, this period photograph shows the filmmaker at work. The stamps - including the photographer's - and annotations on the back attest to the document's professional circulation in the press and production circuits.
