FRANCIS GRUBER - Lot 76
FRANCIS GRUBER The Expressionist painter in his studio, 1930s. 3 photos by Marc Vaux, silver gelatin prints on vintage card stock, stamped by the photographer and annotated on the back. From 16.8 x 11.7 cm to 12.5 x 17.5 cm. Note: These three photographs taken by Marc Vaux show Francis Gruber in his studio during the 1930s, at a time when he was establishing himself as one of the most distinctive figures in French painting between the two world wars. A leading photographer in the Parisian art scene, Marc Vaux compiled an exceptional body of work documenting the artists of his time, capturing studios, artworks, and moments of creation. A major figure in the French Expressionist movement, Francis Gruber developed a style of painting deeply marked by psychological intensity, solitude, and an observation of the contemporary world. Though he died prematurely in 1948, he remains one of the most prominent representatives of the generation known as the “painters of poetic reality.” This collection offers a valuable glimpse into the artist’s working environment and Parisian artistic life in the 1930s.
