HENRI MATISSE - Lot 78
HENRI MATISSE Sketching designs for the future stained-glass windows of the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, 1949. Photo by Walter Carone, later silver print (1990s) on card stock, annotated and stamped on the back. 30 x 24 cm including white borders. Two corner tips have been repaired. Note: This photograph shows Henri Matisse in 1949 working on the preparatory drawings for the stained-glass windows of the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, one of the most important and personal projects of his late career. Designed between 1947 and 1951, this chapel represented for the artist a true synthesis of his explorations of line, light, color, and space. Taken by Walter Carone, this portrait captures a pivotal moment in Matisse’s creative process; though eighty years old at the time, he remained driven by exceptional inventiveness. The Chapel of the Rosary is today considered one of the masterpieces of modern sacred art. This photograph offers a precious glimpse of the artist at work on this major project in the history of 20th-century art.
