ANDRE MARFAING - Lot 88
ANDRE MARFAING Abstract painter (informal painting centered on the color black), 1950s. Photo by Alavoine, vintage silver gelatin print, stamped by the photographer and annotated on the back. 18.2 x 24 cm, including white borders. Some signs of handling, visible mainly when held up to the light. Note: This photograph from the 1950s shows André Marfaing, one of the leading figures of postwar French abstraction. Associated with Informel painting and lyrical abstraction, Marfaing developed a personal visual language based on the interplay of black and light. Through powerful compositions structured by large dark masses and bursts of light, he explored the relationships between space, matter, and spirituality. His work occupies a unique place in the history of European abstraction, alongside artists such as Pierre Soulages and Hans Hartung. Created by photographer Alavoine, this portrait serves as a valuable testament to one of the most important figures in 20th-century French non-figurative painting.
