YVES BRAYER - Lot 130
YVES BRAYER Nudes and Prostitution… 1930s. 3 photographs by Marc Vaux, silver gelatin prints on vintage card stock, based on monotypes created by the painter, photographer’s stamp and annotations on the backs + bookplate (label) from the “Bibliothèque Internationale d’Erotologie” (published by Pauvert) on one back. 23 x 17 cm each, including white borders. Note: This set of three photographs taken by Marc Vaux in the 1930s reproduces monotypes by Yves Brayer devoted to the themes of the nude and prostitution. Before becoming one of the most renowned French figurative painters of the 20th century, Brayer was interested in various aspects of urban life and subjects inspired by the social realities of his time. Monotypes—a technique that produces a single image from an inked plate—hold a special place in his body of graphic work. Taken by Marc Vaux, a leading photographer in the Parisian art scene, these prints constitute a valuable documentary record of works that are little known today. The provenance of one of these prints—bearing an ex-libris from the Bibliothèque Internationale d’Érotologie, founded around the publisher Jean-Jacques Pauvert—further enhances the historical and cultural significance of this collection.
