CHRISTO & JEANNE-CLAUDE - Lot 175
CHRISTO & JEANNE-CLAUDE "The Gates, Central Park, New York City, 1979–2005". 4 vintage color photographs (printed copies) by Wolfgang Volz; credits below the images. 20.3 x 25.4 cm each, including borders. Note: This set of four color photographs, taken by Wolfgang Volz, documents *The Gates, Central Park, New York City*, one of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s most famous projects. Conceived as early as 1979 but realized only in 2005 after more than twenty-five years of administrative procedures and preparation, this monumental installation temporarily transformed the paths of Central Park through the installation of thousands of arches covered with saffron-colored fabric panels. A major figure in environmental art, the artist couple left their mark on the history of contemporary art through their large-scale, ephemeral works, designed to temporarily alter the perception of landscapes and urban spaces. Wolfgang Volz, a close collaborator of Christo and Jeanne-Claude for several decades, served as the principal photographer for their projects. These images thus constitute a valuable record of one of the most iconic installations in early 21st-century contemporary art.
